What to Expect From the Horizon Franchise in 2024 (2024)

The past few years have been quite busy for the Horizon franchise thanks to two major releases in the last two years, with Horizon Forbidden West in 2022, and Horizon Call of the Mountain in 2023. However, it looks to be a quiet year for 2024 with no big releases planned. Regardless of there being no big releases planned for the Horizon franchise, that doesn’t mean that nothing will happen for the franchise in 2024.

Even though it looks to be a quiet year, there are several things to look out for throughout that year, from the release of the long-awaited PC port of Horizon: Forbidden West, to potential new updates and information regarding multiple Horizon projects that are in the works, as well as some potential collaboration between the Horizon franchise and other video games franchises. Not only could there be new info, updates, and collaborations, but Guerrilla Games is known for being very interactive with the fans of the game, so fans can surely look forward to weekly streams on Guerrilla Games' Twitch channel, and the monthly Community Spotlight which highlights some of the best fan work of the month.

Horizon Games Releasing in 2024

Horizon Forbidden West On PC

There are no new confirmed releases in 2024 for the Horizon franchise, but there is good news for PC fans of the franchise. A PC port for Horizon Forbidden West is expected to launch sometime in Q1/Q2 2024. It has been confirmed that the expansion Burning Shores will be included in the PC port. This is certainly great for PC fans as they have been waiting patiently for a PC port since Horizon Forbidden West released in 2022.

Multiple Horizon Projects Could Get Updates

A Horizon MMO Is In Development

Over the last year, there have been rumors circulating the internet about an MMO set in the Horizon franchise, and many jobs listings have popped up over the year regarding an Online Project being developed at Guerrilla Games. Whether this is the rumored MMO project is uncertain, but it does seem that a Horizon MMO has essentially been confirmed, as there is now a codename (written in the font used for the Horizon franchise) for this project that has surfaced on the internet. The project is called “Project Skyline”, and it seems that Sony is collaborating with MMO developer NCSOFT on this project, with the developer reportedly taking the reins.

NCSOFT is a South Korean game developer notable for developing popular MMO titles and franchises such as Lineage, Guild Wars, and Aion. With development seemingly underway, fans of the Horizon franchise could see new information arise, or potentially a teaser trailer of some sort. With the success of NCSOFT's titles, it seems sure that the Horizon MMO is in good hands and that fans are in for a treat when the game releases.

Horizon 3 Is In Development

It has been confirmed that Horizon 3 is in development at Guerrilla Games. However, there is unlikely to be any major announcement regarding the sequel to Horizon Forbidden West. Fans shouldn’t despair though, as there could potentially be small development updates regarding various things about the project and to reassure fans that the game is still under development.

One thing is for certain, Guerrilla Games has hired lots of new people for a ‘single player’ project, which is very likely to be Horizon 3. Not only could there be small updates, but in February, it would have been two years since the release of Horizon Forbidden West, and seven years since the release of Horizon Zero Dawn, so it is very likely that Guerrilla Games and Sony will celebrate these anniversaries in some way.

A Horizon Zero Dawn Port is Reportedly Being Developed for PS5

Back in 2022, it was reported that a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster for PS5 is apparently in the works. Rumors have been circulating ever since and there hasn’t been a confirmation or a denial about whether a PS5 remaster is indeed on the way. Lately more rumors have made claims about a remaster, but that it might not be developed by Guerrilla Games. It could potentially be developed by Nixxes, who previously worked on a PC port for Horizon Zero Dawn, or maybe Bluepoint Games, which specializes in remasters.

Perhaps 2024 will be the year when there will be an official confirmation about a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster. It certainly would be great to see Horizon Zero Dawn updated with current generation graphics and running on a PS5 with ray tracing and other features exclusive to current generation consoles.

Netflix’s Live Action Horizon Show

In 2022, Guerrilla announced that the streaming platform Netflix would be producing a live action TV show adaptation of Horizon. There has been no official information released about the adaptation, but there have been some rumors suggesting that the show might be called Horizon 2074 and that it could be set in the Time of Ashes as well as Aloy’s time. The series could potentially reveal more insight and go into more depth about the fall of humanity. However, as of now, these are just rumors, but perhaps 2024 will be the year when Netflix or Sony reveal more information.

• PlayStation’s State of Play: Guerrilla Games has used PlayStation’s State of Play in the past to provide updates and to announce Horizon Forbidden West. There are no exact dates for these State of Play streams, but PlayStation tends to announce these streams a few days in advance.
• The Anniversary of the Franchise:Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West will both have their anniversaries at the end of February, which would be a perfect opportunity for Guerrilla Games to give updates on various projects.
• The Game Awards: With The Game Awards' track record for 'world premiers', fans of the franchise could potentially expect an update on Horizon projects to appear at this event. However, The Game Awards don't happen until the beginning of December.
• Tudum: Netflix’s annual event where fans celebrate all things Netflix, and the streaming platform releases teasers for new shows and gives production updates. Tudum would be the perfect opportunity to announce anything related to Netflix’s Horizon adaptation. Tudum doesn’t have an exact scheduled date, but in 2023, the event was held from July 16 to July 18.

Fans of the Horizon franchise should certainly look out for new updates on these events. It is not guaranteed that there will be any new updates in 2024, but if there are, then those events are great opportunities for new announcements regarding the Horizon franchise.

Studios That Guerrilla Could Collaborate With In 2024

Guerrilla Games has collaborated with quite a few notable studios over the years to bring Aloy to new worlds or introduce Horizon-inspired items to players of other franchises. Here are the current games that have collaborated with Horizon:

• Little Big Planet 3: To celebrate the launch of Horizon Zero Dawn, outfits inspired by the game were added to Little Big Planet 3.
• Monster Hunter World: A limited-timed event that included a unique mission where Aloy appeared in Monster Hunter World but does not talk and helps fight a monster. A Horizon inspired gear set was also included.
• Death Stranding: A hologram of Aloy, a Watcher, and a Tallneck appear in the game.
• Ghost of Tsushima: A Horizon inspired outfit was released alongside the Iki Island expansion.
